Professional BiographyHaving trained and qualified as a Registered Nurse, at
Middlesex University, and having gained professional registration with the
Nursing and Midwifery Council, Paul obtained his first Staff Nurse post on the Medical Admissions Unit at the prestigious
University Colleage Hospital, where he worked for two years.
Two years to the day from qualifying, Paul started the high profile role of Clinical Practice Facilitator again working at UCLH. This was a challenging post providing education, training and clinical support to all grades of staff on the medicine and elderly care wards at The Middlesex Hospital.
In September 2000, Paul returned to hands-on practice moving to
Barts and the London NHS Trust, working as a Junior Charge Nurse on a Respiratory Medical Ward. This ended up being a short lived move due to a major change in the speciality of the ward.
At this point, Paul made the move from hospital based nursing to primary care, obtaining his first Nurse Practitioner post at Newham NHS Walk-in Centre. His mentor - Lead Nurse Sally McCornack saw a spark of potential and put Paul forward to undertake his Nurse Practitioner training at
City University in London on a programme run by eminent Professor of Nursing - Carol Cox.
Paul continued to work in Newham for two years, until a relocation to Brighton in East Sussex meant it was no longer practical to work in East London. At this point, Paul started to work at the Whitehawk Medical Practice in Brighton. During the next two years due to the development opportunities and support provided by the two General Practitioners, Paul undertook his training to become a Nurse Independent Prescriber. During this time Paul obtained some experiences which as well as being hugely satisfying will the foundations for what was to become.
After two years at Whitehawk, Paul became the youngest Consultant Nurse in the country when he took up the post of Consultant Nurse for Primary Care at
Wandsworth Primary Care Trust in London.
The primary clinical focus for this role was at
Tooting NHS Walk-in Centre, with other clinical experiences undertaken at local Wandsworth GP Practices, the unique setting of Nightingale House (a 300 bedded nursing and residential home with its own GP practice) and within the healthcare clinic at HMP Wandsworth. In February 2007, due to an organisational restructure within the PCT, Paul's role developed to become Consultant Nurse for Unscheduled Care with a clinical focus based purely at Tooting NHS Walk-in Centre.
Paul also regularly teaches as a part of his Consultant Nurse role at
London South Bank and
Kingston Universities. At LSBU Paul has taught on the Non Medical Prescribing and Nurse Practitioner programmes.
From November 2009, and after being full time at NHS Wandsworth for five years, Paul decided to make the move to being self employed for both clinical, teaching and project work.
From January 2011 after being head-hunted, Paul has taken up the post of Modern Matron for the Integrated Healthcare Team at
HMP Winchester, providing management and professional leadership to the 30+ strong team of Nurses and Healthcare Assistants, as well as working as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner / Prescriber alongside the General Practitioner within the Healthcare Centre. Paul also serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team within the prison management structure. The healthcare services at HMP Winchester are provided by
Solent Healthcare.
Over the past few years Paul has regularly contributed to
Nurse Times, Nursing Standard and
Independent Nurse magazines accruing an impressive list of
publications.
